2.  Quick Review: We are studying the age of Imperialism, which is empire building.  In a nutshell, the US was concerned about protecting its overseas business investments and also wanted to compete with the other world powers such as Great Britain and France as they began to colonize around the world.  Therefore, the US began building up its navy and gaining colonies and territories throughout the Pacific through acts of diplomacy or conflict.  The purpose of these acquisitions was to set up naval bases and to have reliable refueling stations for our ships.  The Spanish-American War is one event within the age of Imperialism.  At its conclusion, the US will have gained many more territories establishing itself as a world power.

3.  Watch this video over the Spanish-American War.  It will give you a brief overview of the actions of the war.

4. In the Spanish-American War video the concept of "yellow journalism" was discussed briefly.  We are going to learn about yellow journalism and the role it played in the outbreak of the Spanish-American War.  Make a copy of this document and move it to your Imperialism Unit folder.
